THE TONY MARTINEZ INSTITUTE INC. / OUR MISSION

PROPOSED MISSION · DRAFT FOR REVIEW

Life in possibility.
Care. Discover.
Become.

To expand the possibilities of a fuller life—bringing well-being, discovery, culture, and human connection into a shared vision of what we can become.

A proposed mission for review: a broad, hopeful vision for the institute’s future direction.

01 / WHY THIS INSTITUTE

A wider horizon.
A fuller life.

Our proposed vision begins with a simple question: what helps life flourish?

Health, belonging, curiosity, creative expression, and a sense of purpose all have a place in this inquiry. The institute’s vision brings these interests together, inviting people to see connections between their own lives and a much larger world.

We look toward possibilities for healing and a future in which more conditions can be cured. That hope sits alongside an equally expansive interest in how we learn, create, connect, and live well. A cure is something to hope and work toward, never an outcome to promise.

This is an invitation to learners, families, caregivers, artists, educators, and anyone who sees room for a more thoughtful future. Different experiences and perspectives can help shape a vision that continues to grow.

CULTURAL HORIZONS / ECUADOR & GALICIA

Different shores.
Worlds of imagination.

Clay and feathers. Stone and water. A gallery of distinct traditions, brought into conversation through memory, creativity, and possibility.

VALDIVIA / COASTAL ECUADOR

A human presence, shaped in clay.

Ancient Valdivia artists on Ecuador’s southwest coast made small ceramic human figures. Their stylized forms and carefully rendered hair offer a vivid encounter with the people and creative lives of a distant past.

These objects are archaeological evidence, not illustrations of a single surviving myth. Their original meanings remain debated; a fertility interpretation should not be treated as settled.

A CONTEMPORARY REFLECTION

What might the things we create reveal about how we value human life?

Ecuador’s many cultures and Galicia’s varied traditions each have their own histories. These are selected examples, not a single shared mythology. Illustrations and reflection questions are contemporary creations; resemblance does not establish historical contact. Folklore is presented as storytelling, without claims of medical power.

THE UNSEEN / SYMBOL · MYTH · MYSTERY

A little mystery.
A wider imagination.

Moonlit thresholds, hidden worlds, and the art of transformation. Enter an imaginative chamber where the supernatural and the occult become languages for wonder.

☾ The moonlit threshold

A contemporary scene: a silver path, a quiet shoreline, a door left slightly open. In this imagined landscape, the threshold is a place to pause between the familiar and the possible.

What possibility would you like to make room for?

△ The alchemical imagination

Alchemy’s history joins the transformation of materials with rich artistic and philosophical imagery. Here, the vessel and the circle offer a creative metaphor for patient change and the making of something new.

The Galician mouro and moura stories already in Cultural Horizons offer an entrance into supernatural folklore: places with hidden histories, mysterious inhabitants, and imagined treasure.

These original cards offer creative prompts, rather than predictions. Tarot began as a European card game; its occult and divinatory associations developed later. The symbols here belong to distinct histories and contemporary art, and carry no claims of supernatural or medical efficacy. Read the V&A history of tarot ↗

02 / FIVE PROPOSED GUIDING PRINCIPLES

Many ways
to move forward.

01 / WELL-BEING

Make room for a fuller life.

Consider the whole person: health, relationships, rest, joy, and the freedom to pursue what matters. Let care be an everyday expression of respect and an invitation to participate more fully in life.

02 / DISCOVERY

Stay open to what is possible.

Welcome questions and new perspectives. Explore ideas with curiosity and discernment, remaining clear about what is known and what is still emerging. Let the hope for better ways of living encourage thoughtful learning.

03 / CULTURE & CREATIVITY

Draw inspiration across time.

Explore the stories, art, and symbols through which people have imagined renewal and possibility. Bring cultural memory into conversation with contemporary creativity, respecting its context and welcoming new forms of expression.

04 / HUMAN CONNECTION

Let perspectives meet.

Value conversations across generations, backgrounds, and fields of experience. Listen generously, share with care, and make room for people to contribute in their own way. Connection can be an end in itself.

05 / FUTURE POSSIBILITY

Imagine broadly. Begin today.

Hold a long view while staying attentive to the choices within reach. Ask what we can nurture, preserve, or make possible for those who follow. Let hope lead to considered action and openness to learning.

03 / PAST · PRESENT · FUTURE

Rooted in a story.
Open to a horizon.
